Filmax takes 'Verbo'
First production at Spain's Apaches

MADRID — It is business as usual at Filmax Intl.
One week after Barcelona mini-major Filmax applied for protection from creditors, its international sales division has announced it will handle international rights on Eduardo Chapero-Jackson's "Verbo."
"Verbo" is the feature film debut of European Film Academy Award winner Jackson who took best short for finely observed death drama "Alumbramiento" in 2007.
It is also the first production from Enrique Lopez-Lavigne, Belen Atienza and Jesus de la Vega's Apaches Ent.
Madrid-based, Apaches is bringing onto the market some of the hottest-pursued properties coming out of Spain. These include most mmediately new films by "Orphanage" director Juan Antonio Bayona and Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, who helmed "28 Weeks Later."
Sales companies that pursue Apaches films will have to pay at least substantial minimum guarantees.
"Verbo" also carries the prestige branding of co-production coin from Telecinco Cinema, the company behind "Orphanage," "Pan's Labyrinth" and "Agora."
"Verbo" is the fourth Telecinco Cinema production that Filmax has taken for international is the past 12 months.
Now in post-production, "Verbo" is billed as a dark fantasy thriller about a troubled teen who enters an alternate universe.
Filmax will present early footage of "Verbo" at the Cannes Festival. It has meanwhile continued to tot up sales on "Agnosia," produced by Telecinco Cinema, Roxbury and Madrugada Pics, two other young production companies.
"Our aim is to associate not only with new directorial talent but new and talented producers as well," said Filmax Intl head Vicente Canales.
"Filmax has managed to attract talent we admire, Eugenio Mira, Jaume Balaguero, Paco Plaza and Javier Ruiz — well-rounded cineastes who have an audience-friendly vision of filmmaking," said Lopez-Lavigne.
Filmax prexy Carlos Fernandez said last week that credit protection would not affect Filmax production or international sales biz.
