MADRID -- Days after Rodrigo Cortes' "Buried" sold North America to Lionsgate at Sundance for $3 million- $4 million, the market continues a feeding frenzy for thrillers from new talent in Spain.
Several U.S. majors are circling Spanish theatrical rights for "Agnosia," a fantasy-dosed period thriller from Eugenio Mira ("The Birthday").
Filmax Intl. swooped Wednesday to seal international rights to "Agnosia."
Like "Buried," which is produced by Adrian Guerra's Barcelona shingle Versus Ent. with Safran Co. and Dark Trick Prods., "Agnosia" is the sophomore feature from a Spanish director whose debut won him a rep for technical virtuosity.
Screenplay is by Antonio Trashorras, Guillermo del Toro's co-scribe on "The Devil's Backbone." Del Toro consulted on its screenplay.
Spanish-language "Agnosia" is produced by Miguel Angel Faura for Roxbury, Telecinco Cinema ("Pan's Labyrinth," "The Orphanage") and Madrugada Pictures. Sony's AXN channel in Spain also has minority equity in the thriller.
Toplining Eduardo Noriega ("Vantage Point"), Barbara Goenaga ("Time Crimes") and Martina Gedeck ("The Lives of Others"), "Agnosia" is set in 1899. Goenaga plays an heiress who suffers a brain condition -- agnosia -- which prevents her from correctly understanding what she sees. Meanwhile, in what producer Faura calls a MacGuffin, a German woman, working for an armaments company, plots to steal industrial secrets bequeathed to the heiress.
At the Berlinale, Filmax will show footage of "Agnosia," which is being talked up by Del Toro. "I've read few screenplays in my life that have impressed me as much as 'Agnosia,'" Del Toro is quoted as saying.
Two weeks ago, Filmax took international rights on another hot Spanish genre title, Oskar Santos' "For the Good of Others." The medico thriller with supernatural elements, is produced by Mod Producciones, Telecinco Cinema and Alejandro Amenabar's Himenoptero. "Others" plays Berlin Panorama.
